General
Why is connection time limited for free users?
Free users have a connection time limit to ensure that our servers remain accessible and responsive for everyone. Since free servers are shared among a large number of users, unlimited sessions from individual users could overload the infrastructure and degrade the experience for others.
How it works
- Each free session has a set time limit, after which you will need to reconnect.
- This helps distribute server resources evenly across all users.
- There is no limit on how many times you can reconnect throughout the day.
Want unlimited connection time?
Upgrading to a premium plan removes all session time limits, giving you uninterrupted access to our full server network with faster speeds and priority bandwidth.

We show ads in the free version of the app to cover the costs of running and maintaining our VPN servers. Providing a VPN service requires significant infrastructure, including servers in multiple countries, bandwidth, and ongoing maintenance.
Why ads are necessary
- VPN servers are expensive to operate, especially across 30+ locations worldwide.
- Ads allow us to offer a fully functional VPN to everyone at no cost.
- We carefully select ad providers to minimize disruption to your experience.
How to remove ads
Upgrading to a premium plan removes all ads and provides additional benefits such as faster speeds, more server locations, and unlimited connection time.
Read full answer →Why is the app consuming my traffic?
The VPN itself does not generate or consume additional internet traffic. What it does is redirect all of your device’s network data through our secure servers. This means that any traffic you see attributed to the VPN app is simply your regular internet usage being routed through an encrypted tunnel.
Why it may appear that the VPN uses a lot of data
- All traffic passes through the VPN. When the VPN is active, every app on your device sends and receives data through it. This includes web browsing, streaming, social media, system updates, and background app activity.
- Your actual data usage stays the same. The VPN does not download or upload anything on its own. The data shown under the VPN app in your device settings is the total of all your normal internet activity.
- Minor encryption overhead. VPN encryption adds a very small amount of extra data (typically 5-10%) to each packet, but this is negligible for most users.
Tips to manage data usage
- Check which apps are using the most data in your device settings.
- Disable background data for apps you do not use frequently.
- Connect to Wi-Fi whenever possible to avoid mobile data charges.

What should I do if I can't connect?
If you are having trouble connecting to the VPN, there are a few simple steps you can try to resolve the issue.
Troubleshooting steps
- Try a different server location. Some servers may be temporarily busy or experiencing issues. Switch to another available location and try again.
- Check your internet connection. Make sure your device is connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data before attempting to use the VPN.
- Restart the app. Close the app completely and reopen it, then try connecting again.
- Reinstall the app. If none of the above steps work, uninstall and reinstall the app from Google Play. This resets all settings and often resolves persistent connection problems.
- Disable battery optimization. On some Android devices, aggressive battery saving can interfere with VPN connections. Try excluding My Private VPN from battery optimization in your device settings.
If you continue to experience issues after trying all of these steps, please contact our support team for further assistance.
